My Story
At 6 years old living in Nigeria, I was introduced to a seemingly insignificant game, Scrabble, that unknowingly transformed my life forever.
Before Scrabble, a mindset of insignificance induced by early imposed stigmas caused me to be withdrawn and feel purposeless.
Attending my first international tournament in Dubai at the age of 7 and witnessing how Scrabble united players from all over the globe, I felt a true sense of community. This sliver into the life of a scrabble player inspired me to find a community in this game.
In search of a scrabble community here in the United States, I found my local club 359, where I met players, mostly females of all ages, who enjoyed the game both on a casual and competitive basis. Through that community, I connected with people from all over the country and attended my first national tournament in New Orleans in 2017. My New Orleans tournament experience further enhanced the sense of community that I felt in Dubai and helped me on the path of self-esteem and worth. Through persistence in the game and meeting like-minded women navigating a game dominated by men, I grew in confidence and assurance in my actions.
Starting T.I.L.E.S. has been my persistent desire, and I am glad to use Scrabble to empower many females, as it did for me.
